Arkansas became a state 190 years ago on June 15, 1836. Since then, the state has been called isolated, lawless, rural, and untamed - but it's also known as The Wonder State, the Land of Opportunity, and the Natural State. But why?

This exhibit examines the myths and realities portrayed in media, literature, humor, and tourism that gave Arkansas its image as a diamond-shining state, a hidden gem, a rough and rowdy, rugged, and remote land full of hillbillies, bears, and moonshiners in the backwoods.

Fort Smith Museum of History artifacts and holdings will complement the traveling exhibit to show themes of Arkansas's lived history with regional context for a whole new look at these authentic historical perspectives.

Free to FSMH members - regular admission rates apply for non-members.

Every day in June during regular hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10 am - 4 pm

The Fort Smith Museum of History is located in the old downtown of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Being the oldest functioning museum in the state, we present a fascinating reflection of the people and culture that built the city and area.
