In Parker's Court: The Trial of Julia Bourland
Time & Location
About the Event
The Trial of Julia Bourland for the murder of Maud Allen
It was the love triangle that shook the city, and the murder that made history. The whole thing played out in public, complete with timely reports in the local newspapers.
When Fagan Bourland took his first look at young and lovely Maud Allen, he set in motion events that would take her life. While Fagan was happy with his young mistress, his wife, Julia, wanted her out of the picture.
Desperate to have Maud gone, Julia made two failed attempts to end the young woman’s life. Both resulted in sensational stories spread across the newspapers, but neither stopped the relationship between Maud Allen and Fagan Bourland, nor did they result in serious punishment for Julia.
When she felt she reached her limit, Julia made a third attempt to rid her life of Maud and save her marriage. She was, at last, successful, Maud was dead.
This time, Julia went to court.
The trial of Julia Bourland for the murder of her husband’s mistress, Maud Allen, was one for the books. Pulled from the headlines of the day, the courtroom drama will be recreated June 19th at the Fort Smith Museum of History. Local reenactors will bring the story to life, and you will hear the testimony presented in Judge Bryan’s court, and decide for yourself if Julia Bourland was justified when she put two bullets into young Maud.
Guests will be welcomed for light refreshments before the event at 5:40pm. The trial begins at 6pm, and you will have a chance to take a seat on the jury to see if you agree with the decision made in 1897.
